We have stayed several times at Sunburst and believe that this outfitter is the cleanest, cheapest and nicest of the lower area. This river is my favorite due to the flow, gradient changes and beauty of the river. Here is a link to an interesting article about the river and it's history. Sunburst has cabins, campsites and RV spots with electirc and water. Don't miss this one! Oh, and for those with access to aircraft, they have access to the neighbor's runway.

We enjoyed our stay at Sunburst as well. We are looking forward to going back. There is a lot to do besides fishing and canoeing. I wouldn't miss a flow trip or fishing this part of the White River though. A trip to the mills close by are a short drive. My favorite is Dawt Mill. Definitely will be going to Dawt Mill sometime this camping trip too. At Sunburst there is a large open area, that is perfect for playing ball, hooster golf or even star glazing. The last time we went, we glazed at the stars instead of a campfire and we were watching for metorite too. It was too hot then for a campfire. I can tell you, that this area cools off quite nicely in the evening hours. We camped in August and had to use a fleece blanket at night. The White River runs through the camp area. Sunburst does have a nice Bathroom & Showerhouse. One thing that came in handy, was the ice machine. It's open 24 hours and set up on a honor system. Very convenient, I must say.

There are two mills in the area to visit, Dawt and Hodgen. There is also one of the springs that are on the river you can hike to from Hammond Camp. Norfork Lake is very close. If there is interest I can check to see if we can spelunck a cave on the Monks property in the area or at least trek over their rope bridge. You can drive up to Twin Bridges for some photography.

Sue and I are planning on making this trip. We used to hunt off of Hwy AM out of Cabool down in Big Gulch Creek which feeds Hungry Creek then on to the North Fork which was about a mile or so down stream from camp. Beautiful country down there. Took many a day trip down to river back then but never floated or did much else. Looking forward to going back. What are the floating plans? What section? I would like to shoot the falls, but I think thats too far up to end back at Sunburst.

I just found this club via internet search, so interested in some general info. Saw some pictures with kids, but do many of you have kids and bring them? Mine have kayaked before they could walk, we are flat-water folks, but always enjoy meeting new people. I'm from the kansas city area and have floated with the St. Louis kayak and Canoe club, but got a pop-up last year and looking to find 'like-minded' groups. But I have kids and I know some do not want them along. We're pretty straight-laced, quiet types, though. Just curious.

Rcjsmom,
First let me welcome you to ORCC, we are glad you have decided to come on board. We are a family camping group. Most of our campouts are on class I or II rated streams or rivers. These make for great family floats. So by all means bring the kids, they will have a good time. You and your family are always welcome to join us at any event.

Hello rcjsmom,
Our kids are grown and the only one who camps with us is our youngest and she is 19. She only goes every once in awhile. We really enjoy camping with kids. Children seem to keep us feeling young at heart Heck most of the people (especially Chris) in this group have labeled me a BIG Kid and have to keep there eye on me

Welcome to the group rcjsmom - glad to have you - enjoy the pop-up and camping with your family. I have two boys that go with us every time we camp (though I don't make many of the group events since I am in IA). I'm sure your kids will be welcome.

Great! It always makes my boys happier when there are kids to run around with... They are 5 and 15 (soon to be 16). I can't wait for warmer weather ! This trip sounds like one we'll be on, barring unforeseen circumstances ... Thanks for the welcome!

OK everyone!
I just got off the phone with Amy at Sunburst. She is holding RV sites 5 - 10. For those of us that have been there before, it is the same area. There is a Volleyball court right in front of us. These sites have water and electric. If we have more than five she said we can double up. There is plenty of space.
We have site 5, with two canoes reserved for a Saturday float. We are tentative to float the Twin Bridges to Sunburst trip. This is a 17 mile float at appoximately 7-8 hours long. This river has a good flow from Hammond on down and a good flow from Twin Bridges to Hammond if Spring brings an average rainfall. If most people don't want to float that far then we can switch to the Hammond to Sunburst trip of 4 -5 hours at 12 miles. We will be bringing several teenages. As always, kids are welcome.
Amy is holding these sites as a tentative so don't wait too long to reserve. If we get 7 canoe rentals then there is a discount. They also charge $20 to protage you canoe if you dont' want to drive it.
Call the number above and ask for Amy. Also tell her you are with the Phil Stock/ORCC group. All reservations will be under your own name for both CS and canoe.
Besides the float I think we will try to run over to Blue Springs and Dawt Mill. Sunburst also have tube and kayak rentals.
Hope to see some new faces this year. I also hope to see Alan run the falls!
